Acquiring or Terminating Citizenship of the Republic of Armenia

Process of acquisition and termination of the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia

The person acquiring or terminating citizenship of the Republic of Armenia must apply in person. In order to schedule an appointment and submit the documents at the Embassy of Armenia in Washington DC, please, call 2023191976, ext.1 or send an email to armconsularusa@mfa.am.

citizenship of the Republic of Armenia

3. Valid passport
4. 6 color photos of 35x45mm in size
5. Birth certificate

Birth certificates issued by US authorities has to be certified with Apostille.

Citizens born in the following countries instead of a birth certificate may present:
Iran – Identity card شناسنامه
Lebanon, Syria, Iraq - Identity card بطاقة هوية الجمهورية اللبنانية or إخراج قيد إفرادي

6. One of the following documents of proof of Armenian Ethnicity

• Baptism Certificate issued by religious institutions with a note of Armenian ethnicity of the applicant or his /her parent
• Document stating Armenian ethnicity given by the competent authorities of the foreign country apostilled or with consular authentication
• The birth certificate or other identification of a parent, grandfather, grandmother, sister or brother, which has a note of Armenian ethnicity. Birth certificates of brothers and sisters from common parents may be accepted as proof of Armenian ethnicity, if their nationality is due to the ethnicity of their common parents. There must also be a supporting document of blood relation issued by the competent government authorities. Passports, birth certificates, certificates of residence, travel documents, documents stating residency for non-citizens in RA are also considered supporting documents if they contain notes about having Armenian ethnicity.

7. In case of name change, document confirming changes /Marriage Certificate, Certificate of Naturalization or Court Decree/. Such documents issued by US authorities has to be certified with Apostille.

General information

All documents in a foreign language must be translated into Armenian and must have notary authentication. The mentioned service is also provided by the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Washington DC only in case of translation from Russian and English.

Please submit a full package of required documents. If the package of submitted documents is not complete, you will be able to replenish it within five days. If you do not submit missing documents within the deadline, your application will be terminated in accordance with the law and will not result in legal consequences for you.

Deadlines

The citizenship of the Republic of Armenia is granted by the decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia. Citizenship applications are reviewed within a six-month period. In case of rejection of the application, you can apply again within a year after the date of the rejection.

Procedure for obtaining a passport

According to “Nationality Law” of the Republic of Armenia in order to obtain your passport of the citizen of the Republic of Armenia, you are required to appear in person to the Passport and Visa Department of the Police of the Republic of Armenia /address: Davtashen, 4th District, 17/10 Building, Yerevan, RA/

In case of absence of the citizenship of another state, written confirmation about the legal opportunity of acquiring the citizenship of
the given country, issued by the competent authority of the foreign state
5. Birth certificate
6. 6 color photos of 35x45mm in size
7. Marriage certificate / marriage dissolution certificate
8. Birth certificate (s) of child/children
9. For military persons (up to 50 years old) military ID
10. Proof of payment of consular fees

General information

Application on termination of the Citizenship of minor can be submitted only after the parent's Citizenship of Armenia has been terminated according to the above mentioned procedure.
