Commemoration event in Washington, D.C. for the 25th anniversary of the Sumgait tragedy

03 March, 2013

Within the framework of activities dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Sumgait tragedy, a liturgy and commemorative event in the memory of innocent victims was held on March 3 at St. Mary Armenian Apostolic Church in Washington, D.C., under the auspices of the Embassy of Armenia to the United States and the office of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic. The event was attended by the staff of the Embassy of Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh representation, as well as many representatives of the Armenian community.

Along with the spiritual fathers of St. Mary Church, remarks were offered by Ambassador of Armenia to the U.S. Tatoul Markarian and Nagorno Karabakh Republic representative Robert Avetisyan. The speakers emphasized in particular the importance of ceremonies in the Diaspora in remembrance of the crimes perpetrated by Azerbaijan against Armenians in Sumgait and elsewhere, especially against the Azeri campaign in Washington and other capitals towards the revision of the history of Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
