Soorp Khatch Armenian Apostolic Church of Washington D.C. marks its 50th anniversary

Within the framework of events dedicated to the 50th anniversary of consecration of Soorp Khatch Armenian Apostolic Church of Washington D.C., a liturgy service was held by Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America, on November 9, 2014.

Following the service, Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan conducted the consecration of a new cross-stone located in the yard of the Church. This cross-stone is the exact copy of one of the khachkars destroyed by the Azerbaijan forces in Nakhichevan. In his remarks the Archbishop mentioned that this cross-stone should be the witness to not only our nation’s history full of difficulties, but also to our rebirth, victory and prosperity.

Same evening, Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy, Mr. Robert Avetisyan, Representative of Nagorno Karabakh Office, Dr. Dertad Manguikian, member of the Catholicosate Central Executive Board, Dr. Zareh Soghomonyan, Chairman of Board of Trustees, Reverend Father Sargis Aktavukian, the Pastor of Soorp Khach Church and others delivered speeches at the official reception. All speakers highly appreciated the significant role that Soorp Khatch Armenian Church plays in the Armenian community life and the great devotion and activities of its parish members in preserving the Armenian identity.

H.E. Tigran Sargsyan, Ambassador of Armenia to the United States, in his remarks presented by Deputy Chief of Mission Mr. Hrachia Tashchian, congratulated the participants on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of consecration of the Soorp Khatch Armenian Apostolic Church and emphasized that through protection and expansion of Christian values and belief, it has assumed the high and noble mission to be one of the cultural, academic and educational centers of the Armenian American community. “Soorp Khatch Armenian Apostolic Church, which is considered one the major centers of the US East coast, has a significant role in preservation of the Armenian identity and makes its daily contribution to solve pan-Armenian issues”, the Ambassador noted in his remarks.

Leaders and members of the Armenian American organizations, representatives of the Armenian community attended the event.
