Armenian Genocide Centennial commemoration events in Washington D.C.

24 April, 2015

On April 24 a demonstration dedicated to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide took place at the courtyard of the Embassy of Armenia to the United States. The demonstration had about 600 participants, including numerous leaders of the US East coast Armenian organizations, Representatives of the Armenian communities of Washington DC and the neighboring states.

At the crosstone in the Embassy courtyard a special prayer was served by the religious leaders of St. Mary and Holy Cross Armenian Apostolic Churches.

In his speech the Ambassador of Armenia to the USA noted that the Genocide is vivid in our memory inter alia because of the reason that today we are facing denialism towards it. “Denialism is the continuation of the genocide… Those implementing denialist policy will never go for reconciliation. And the supporters of denialism become accomplices of the crime”.

One century ago the backbone of our nation was broken. A considerable part of our intellectuals was eliminated. Our answer to the perpetrators of the Genocide is: “We do exist and we will exist.” And the secret of our success is in the unity of our diverse, worldwide spread and talented people.

During the event, speeches were delivered by Mr. Robert Avetisyan, representative of the NKR to the USA, and Mr. Aram Hamparian, executive director of the Armenian National Committee of America in Washington DC.

On April 24, in the framework of the events commemorating Centennial of the Armenian Genocide an event dedicated to the life and activities of the famous Armenian-American Armenian painter Arshile Gorky was held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. The event was organized by Valeska Wittig from the museum. Ms. Valeska delivered a speech about the great artist. A number of details were presented from his life. The fact that Arshile Gorky was an Armenian and was born in Van was especially stressed. The Armenian Genocide was thoroughly described in the context of the famous painting “The Artist and His Mother”. It was noted that homesickness has had an inerasable impact on the psychological character and the mindset of the painter. The great impact of the artist on the American fine Arts and particularly on the “abstract impressionism” was especially underscored.

The event was attended by Ambassador Tigran Sargsyan and his wife, as well as the Ambassador of Germany to the United States Peter Wittig and his wife.
