Commemoration of the 98th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in the Washington D.C.

24 April, 2013

On April 24, representatives of the Armenian community of the greater Washington area gathered near the cross-stone at the Embassy of Armenia in a commemoration ceremony to honor the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

The Armenian community organizations laid wreaths near the monument, after which the spiritual leaders of Washington’s Saint Mary and Holy Cross Armenian Apostolic Churches conducted a service in memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

Later that day the Armenian Genocide commemoration event was held in the U.S. Senate, upon the invitation of the U.S. Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, with the cooperation of the Embassy of Armenia to the United States and the Armenian-American organizations. The event was attended by around thirty congressmen, diplomats, heads of the Armenian-American organizations, leaders of the Armenian Church, journalists and approximately 300 representatives of the Armenian community.

Robert Menendez, Chairman of Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and Ed Royce, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the U.S. House of Representatives delivered the opening remarks. Speeches were made by the Co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues of the House of Representatives, as well as over two dozen members of Congress. All speakers condemned the genocide committed in Turkey against Armenians during the first genocide of the 20th century, the policy of denial adopted by the Turkish government, and called upon the U.S. Congress and the administration to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide.

In his speech, Tatoul Markarian, Ambassador of Armenia to the U.S. denounced Turkish policy of denial noting that it has no future, and highlighted the importance of joint efforts toward overcoming it.

The 98th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was also commemorated at Washington’s Saint Mary and Holy Cross Armenian Apostolic Churches which offered services in remembrance of the innocent victims. Services were attended by Ambassador Markarian, diplomatic stuff of the Armenian Embassy and the NKR Office, and numerous members of the Armenian community.
