Commemoration of the 102nd Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Washington DC.

24 April, 2017

On April 24 the Washington DC area Armenian community participated in the traditional wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the 102nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The solemn ceremony was marked by the annual community prayer, offered by Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, Diocesan Legate of the Diocese of Armenian Apostolic Church in Eastern US, joined by Soorp Khatch Armenian Apostolic Church pastor, Father Sarkis Aktavoukian and St. Mary's Armenian Church pastor, Father Hovsep Karapetyan.

The ceremony was followed by a reception at the Embassy. The event featured remarks by Ambassador Hovhannissian and a number of participants and was concluded by song and poetry recitations by Hamastegh Armenian School students. The distinguished guest of the evening was Mr. Ken Khachigian, President Reagan’s chief speechwriter and the author of his 1981 annual statement, in which the president used the term “Genocide”.

Prior to the traditional ceremony the members of the Armenian community had participated in a peaceful protest in front of the Turkish embassy, demanding the Turkish authorities to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
