On November 15 the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia to the United States of America, in collaboration with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, hosted a discussion and book signing event with Smithsonian curator Halle Butvin and Lavash cookbook authors Kate Leahy, John Lee and Ara Zada․ Numerous diplomats accredited to the USA, Department of State officials, Armenian community members attended the event. The authors discussed the idea of the book, told about their trip to Armenia and Artsakh, elaborated on the collecting of the recipes of traditional dishes and turning it into a book. The book introduces numerous Armenian dishes which make a fine combination with lavash.
Welcoming the guests, Varuzhan Nersesyan, the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the United States of America highlighted the importance of organizing of such events aimed at presenting the Armenian culture to the foreigners. Ambassador Nersesyan emphasized that Lavash yet in 2014 was included in Representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO and it is not a coincidence that it is enlisted as one of the top breads of the world by leading mass media. The Ambassador noted that Armenia is recently becoming one of the most active tourism destinations and the Armenian cuisine has it's significant role in that.
During the reception the guests tasted Armenian wines, as well as a wide range of Armenian dishes featured in Lavash.
On the same day in the morning the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage hosted “Lavash: An Expression of Armenian Heritage,” a cooking demonstration and discussion at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. The audience of the public event experienced the stories from the authors as they prepared some of the Armenian national dishes.
