On February 12th a commemoration event dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of Baku Pogroms took place in the US Congress. Several members of the House of Representatives, Congressional staffers, leaders of the Armenian-American organizations, religious leaders and many representatives of the Armenian community attended the event.
The co-chairs of the Armenian Caucus Frank Pallone and Jackie Speier, as well as Judy Chu, Jim Costa, TJ Cox, Janice Schakowsky, Gus Bilirakis, Andy Levin, Raja Krishnamoorthi in their speeches condemned the pogroms by the Azerbaijani authorities against Armenians, highlighted the realization of the right of Artsakh people for self-determination as well as emphasized the importance of continuous assistance to Artsakh.
Robert Avetisyan, the Permanent Representative of Artsakh Republic to the USA extended gratitude to all the Congressmen and Congresswomen for condemning Baku massacres, also to all those institutions which provided refuge for the survivors of the Baku Pogroms.
Varuzhan Nersesyan, the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the USA, reaffirmed his gratitude to both Senate and the House of the Representatives for adopting the Resolutions recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Ambassador Nersesyan noted that the Baku Pogroms must be considered in a broader context of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. The pogroms in Kirovabad, Sumgait and Baku were the violent reaction of the Azerbaijani authorities to the peaceful movement for self-determination in Artsakh.
Ambassador extended his gratitude to all the Congressmen and Congresswomen for their support to Artsakh highlighting that Artsakh, Armenia and USA share common values of democracy and human rights protection.
Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte, a Baku pogrom survivor, recalled the story of her family who survived the pogroms in Baku, as well as to losses of her friends’ families living then in Baku, the vandalism of Azerbaijanis towards Armenians. She noted that the Azerbaijani authorities continue their anti Armenian propaganda which results to new Armenian civilian killings.
After the speeches other survivors of Baku pogroms shared their stories with the audience.
