Garegin Pastermadjian (Armen Garo), a revolutionary, statesman and diplomat, was known in the Caucasus, Europe, and the United States advocating the Armenian cause. Born into a prominent family and educated in his native Karin (Erzeroom), as well as in France and Switzerland, he became a lead figure in Ottoman Armenian political life and was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Ottoman Empire prior to the Genocide of Armenians by Ottoman Turkey in 1915. As a member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, he was deeply involved in the events leading up to the proclamation of the Armenian Independence in 1918.
