The official opening ceremony of the exhibition entitled “Witnesses to the Armenian Genocide” took place on April 18 at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation on Capitol Hill. The exhibition was launched by the efforts of the Armenian Genocide Museum of Armenia, which showcased little-know and never-before-seen photographs of German witnesses of the Armenian Genocide.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of Armenia to the U.S. Tatoul Markarian, Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Culture Artur Poghosyan, representatives from the Embassy of Armenia and the Office of the Nagorno Karabakh republic, clergymen of the Lutheran Church, spiritual Fathers of the Armenian Apostolic Church, leaders of community organizations and representatives of the Armenian community.

In a speech at the opening of the exhibition, Ambassador Markarian noted that these commemorative events not only honor the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide, but also perform and important mission of increasing the awareness, and thus preventing the possibility of future genocides. Ambassador Markarian thanked the Lutheran Church of the Reformation for holding the exhibition.

The leader of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation emphasized the importance of commemorating the victims of Genocide. He expressed confidence that the community of believers must be informed of the 20th century’s first genocide.

Rouben Adalyan, Director of the Armenian National Institute in Washington, presented the exhibits and provided a brief historical overview of the Armenian Genocide.
