25 April, 2012

On April 25, an event to commemorate the 97th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, was held in the historic Senate Kennedy Caucus Room in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Armenian Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Embassy of Armenia and the Armenian-American organizations.

The co-chairs of the Armenian Caucus and around thirty members of U.S. Congress delivered speeches. The speakers condemned the crimes against Armenians at the down of the 20th century in Ottoman Empire/ Turkey and called upon the U.S. Congress and the administration to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide.

Tatoul Markarian, Ambassador of Armenia to the U.S, emphasized in his speech that international recognition of the Armenian Genocide has been and remains in Armenia’s foreign policy agenda. Ambassador Markarian expressed gratitude to all the members of Congress who have worked toward international recognition of the Genocide. He announced that for the strengthening and development of friendly U.S.- Armenia relations, as well as the significant contributions made in Armenian Genocide recognition, Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL), Comgresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-CA) and Congressman Bard Sherman (D-CA) were awarded the Mkhitar Gosh Medal by the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan.

The representatives of the Embassy of Armenia and the Office of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic attended the event, along with the spiritual Fathers of the Armenian Apostolic Church, leaders of the Armenian community organizations and hundreds of representatives of the Armenian community.
