21st Anniversary Event for Armenia’s Independence in Cleveland, Ohio

21 September, 2012

On September 21, Cleveland City Hall hosted an event dedicated to the 21st anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Armenia, which was attended by Mayor Frank Jackson, senior officials, leaders of community organizations and over 200 representatives of the Armenian community. The event was organized by the local Armenian community in cooperation with the Embassy of Armenia to the US.

Congratulating attendees on the occasion of the 21st anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Armenia, Mayor Frank Jackson emphasized the Proclamation designating September 21st as Armenian Statehood Day in the City of Cleveland, which particularly notes that Armenia, being “the first nation adopting Christianity established the first Armenian democratic republic after the Armenian Genocide of 1915 and in 1991 Armenia restored its independence, without support of any foreign power”.

The Declaration highly praises the fact that Armenia has become a prosperous, peaceful and safe country with strong international relations, and has protected the freedom of Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the Proclamation, Armenia is a model for other countries in the region.

The document also notes that “Cleveland is proud to be called home to a vibrant Armenian Community whose rich cultural heritage and family values continue to be passed along to future generations through the many Armenian-American religious, social, fraternal and cultural organizations”.

The event was concluded by a ceremony of raising the Armenian flag in the rotunda of Cleveland City Hall.
